Tough Mountain Challenge, Sunday River, ME - July 26, 2014
From Sarah: Peter Rackley and I ran or rather, completed the Tough Mountain Challenge at Sunday River in Maine. Last year, it was a 5k length obstacle course but this year, they changed it to 4 miles and added a few more twists, turns and climbs. The obstacles weren't that difficult and were pretty fun with the exception of WTF which is a pretty steep mountain climb up one of the ski trails. I run a decent amount of hills but it's hard to be prepared for how steep some of the climbs are in this race. We finished in 1:22:17, 20:35 pace this year. Last year, in the 5k, we did 1:15:56 which is a 24:30 so I would say, we did much better. Here is a pic of me crawling through the mud under the barbed wire in the Shredder obstacle. Overall, this is a super fun race with a free tech shirt, plastic mug, and a free beer that you can drink during the course or after the race! It's so much fun, we're already signed up again for next year!

Casco Days 4-Miler, Casco, ME - July 26, 2014
From Mike: Race went better than Thursday night. Was easily one of the nicer race days you can ask for in July. Race has a bunch of local campers running, along with a host of locals. Course has a few solid and steady climbs, but nothing too severe. Race ends at a fair complete with fresh squeezed lemonade, a food bar, fried dough, games, and a ferris wheel! Always one of my favorite summer races.

Marathon Sports 5-Miler, Weston - July 24, 2014
From Mike: Tonight was not so good. Temp was excellent and considering the last few years was as good as you will ever get. I was painting my daughter's room that day and was positioned awkwardly under her built in desk. I pulled a muscle in my back and it flared up that night as I was running, about mile 2 and nagged ask the way to the finish. Still finished with a semi respectable time, but knew I really could've finished better. Lord knows when we will have a race time temp in the low 70's again.

East End 5-Miler, Lowell - July 20, 2014
From Mary: This is usually one of the hottest and sunniest races of the season, but we lucked out this year with good running conditions in mid-70’s and lots of clouds. It's a hilly course, but a great party – easy to see why it was one of Larry's favorite races. It had hamburgers, turkeyburgers, hot dogs, pizza, chips, salad, watermelon, and of course, free beer, plus a live band and technical tee shirts, a new addition since Larry's day. I had hoped to break an hour, but tripped on a loose shoelace at mile 4 and had to retie my shoe which hasn’t happened in many a year! Ran well otherwise. I saw just a few other TVFR runners. Ted ran instead of taking photos, but Jim Rhoades took pictures, which are up with the race results on CoolRunning.
Back on My Feet in24 Urban Ultra, Philadelphia, PA - July 19, 2014
From John: I ran the 2014 Back On My Feet in24 Urban Ultra - 24 hour race on Saturday, July 19th. Although the weather was nice, cloudy with temps in the low 80's but humid, it was a tough day for me. I began feeling the effects of the heat and humidity in the first 4-5 hours. I tried to slow down some but it didn't help. After 50 miles and again after about 59 miles I took an hour and a 3 hour break to fight the nausea. I finally called it a day after 76 miles. I can't say I'm happy with the results but it was a fun race just the same.

Shipyard Old Port Half Marathon, Portland, ME - July 13, 2014
From John: This race started at 7AM. What I thought was a flat course had a significant hill at mile 3 with a very steep downhill. The next 3 miles were flat followed by another good climb 6 and again at 7. Miles 8-12 followed a smooth gravel trail around Back Cove, then finishing at Casco Bay. Music and after party followed. Portland is great city for a race.
From Mike: Was able to catch up with John Dumont, but missed David Johndrow. Pretty interesting race with a flat start to a long climb (around mile 3), to a steep descent, to flat, to a climb (around mile 6), to a descent, and then some gravel "trail". The only not enjoyable part was running right by the water sewage treatment plant! A great post race party and an efficient pizza and beer operation.

Golden Gate 50K, Marin Headlands, CA - July 12, 2014
From Anthony: Absolutely beautiful course in the Marin Headlands overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge and Sausalito, CA. Not too technical, but 6,500 feet of climbing made it plenty tough!

Run with the Beavers Trail Race 10M, Chepachet, RI - July 12, 2014
From Rich: I was holding off sending this along because they have some errors in the results. It shows me 41st, finishing in 1:40:02. I think I was actually 43rd, finishing in 1:41:38. Race is two 5-mile laps. Very technical, mostly single track. Surprisingly close (~30 minute ride from Mendon). I will try to do this one again.
