Annual Marshfield Road Runners 20K - Marshfield, MA - August 30,
2009 -
From Harry: The
Marshfield 20K was Rat Race #4. The weather wasn't bad, cool
and cloudy, the the course was hilly. Not a lot of flat in
this race, you are either running up or down, including a steep hill at
8 and a long hill (that you get to run twice) at 6 and 11.
Hot dogs and pretzels after the race. Awards are gift
certificates rather than trophies, which is nice.

Butterfly
5K - North Attleboro, MA - August 23, 2009
- Over 450 runners on a hot and
very muggy day. Stephanie Jarvis was 6th in her tough
division (out of 39). Charlene Gaboriault takes 1st in her
division. Followed by Mary Tyler's 4th place finish.

Swimsuit
Classic 5K Race - Wakefield, MA - August 16, 2009
- From
Mary Tyler: Ted ran the Swimsuit 5K race around
Wakefield's Lake Quannapowitt today. It was his first race since knee
scoping back in April. and for that matter, first race since Sharon
Timlin back in June of 2008 at which point his knee hurt so bad he
didn't race again until today. He took it really
slow, we both had trouble with the heat today and he got a
cramp in his calf, but he says it felt good to be back racing
again. Interesting gifts - small track
bags instead of tee shirts for all, and awards were blue and white
striped beach towels with the Mystic Roadrunners printed discreetly on
one corner. Very appropriate for a swimsuit race.
Unfortunately not a lot of swimsuits present. A few swimsuit
tops and cover-ups were worn by a couple of the girls and
some of the colorful knee-length "shorts" worn by the guys
were probably swimsuits, but no bikinis or speedos. We've
never run one but pictures I've seen of evening swimsuit or bikini
races from last year had a lot more swimsuits. Maybe 6:30 at
night seems more acceptable than Sunday morning,

- August 1, 2009 - From Harry
Jarvis - No entry fee. Start and finish at the beach.
Chowder, fruit and soda post-race. Johnny Kelly himself started the
race. (John J. Kelly won the Boston Marathon in 1957, the only member
of the BAA to ever do so.) Larry ran this race
once before, in 1970.

Annual Beach to Beacon 10K - Cape Elizabeth, ME - August 1, 2009 -
Over
5615 finishers in this race put on by Joan Benoit
Samuelson. Linda and Charlene both finished in
under an hour. From Charlene:
I thought it was suppose to be downhill for the first several miles
with some steep hills near the end. NO! It seemed
like gradual up-hills all the way with killer hills at the
end. Fairly hot and muggy but plenty of water and hoses along
the way. Tons of food at the end. A nice race!
