Run to the Border 20 Mile - Salisbury, MA - March 29, 2009 -
We haven't heard for Harry but this must have been an
ordeal with an old fashioned nor'easter blowing in
during the race. Good job by Harry with a sixth
place finish first in his division.
From
Harry Jarvis: Conditions were tough on the New England
coast with temps in the low 40s, a stiff wind off the
ocean and light to moderate rain throughout the race.
By the mid point of the race I was soaked through to my
tighty-whities and my shoes were sloshing. Thank
Heaven for polyester. There were more than a few
shivering runners in line for soup back at the hotel.
Well, at least I didn't sunburn.

Trail Race - Winchester, MA - March 28, 2009
From
Sara Minsk: Well, this was my first
trail race ever and the farthest I have ever run.
There was my race, an 8 miler, and an ultra race
starting at the same time. I had to do 1 loop and
the ultra runners had to do 3 ,4, or 5. I got a little
worried when people at the start asked me if I knew
exactly what the course was like since I had picked this
race as my first trail race. That should have
given me a heads up as it was brutal! It is
basically a single track trail that is just one killer
hill or long incline after another interspersed with
tons of rocks and roots. In fact, on several
occasions we had to literally scale up the side of
boulders using our hands like we were rock climbing. It
was actually pretty awesome!! I have never seen
trail markers painted on the side of rocks pointing up!
This course was definitely NOT for the faint of
heart.... I somehow managed to survive and
was the 11th runner (1:56) in out of 18 runners to start
the race and was the 3rd woman. The winner came in
at 1:17. Thank goodness I had included hills in my
training or I would have been toast! This race
definitely confirmed my love of trail running! I
could not believe the support, advice, and encouragement
out on the trail the other runners gave me. It was
really an amazing experience and I am very proud and
happy to have finished the race!!

Run
for Humanity 5K - Attleboro, MA - March 28, 2009 -
Wow!!!
Mike Sawyer takes first place overall in this race of
111 runners. Mike was just smoking at the end and
didn't even look like he was breaking a sweat.
Meredith Dutton takes first for the women and 7th
overall. She was almost 4 minutes in front of the
next woman. Great job Mike and
Meredith! Charlene Gaboriault also takes
first in her division with Mary Tyler taking second in
the same division. It was a perfect day for
running - cloudy, cool in the mid forties and a totally
flat course.
From
Meredith Dutton: This race has a nice small field, an
essentially flat course, excellent traffic control,
times yelled out at Miles 1 & 2, and friendly,
capable volunteers and organizers. On top of
all this, we were blessed with perfect running weather
yesterday. --A pleasant step into spring...

SunTrust
National Marathon - Washington, DC - March 21, 2009
-
From
John Dumont: This is a great Boston
qualifier. The race starts and ends adjacent to
RFK Stadium at the Armory. The course is mostly
flat offering good views of some of DC's monuments and
buildings as well as some parks along the river.
Race day started early at 7am on a clear windless day
with temps in the 30's and rising into the low 50's by
race end. There is some crowd support along the
way for the 3000 plus runners; another large group ran
the half-marathon. Water and "GU"
stations were plentiful. My race started well
and while I was treating this as a training run, I did
manage to close in on the 3:30 pace group, but at the
10M mark started feeling knee pain that eventually
forced me to walk/run much of the second half of the
course. That said, I did finish and my
wind and energy were fine, only lingering knee
pain. Chalk that one up to a humbling
experience.

32nd
Annual New Bedford Half Marathon - New Bedford, MA -
March 15, 2009
- A
good turnout for men of Tri-Valley in the second USATF
Grand Prix race. The team of John Brown, Don
Palladini, Harry Jarvis, Don Basso and Todd Keiller
capture 5th place in the USATF Men's Senior 50+
division.
From
Gary Atlas: It was a warm 55 degree day in
New Bedford
today. Close to 2000 runners (300 more than last
year!) were out to celebrate spring, shoe-away winter
and attend the south sea coast’s 32nd NBHM.
The expected head winds happened after mile 7 and
lasted to mile 9 . The 2nd water-front leg
of the course had benefitted from this as the wind was
at our backs for the remainder of the stretch.
The organizers were ready with ample water supplies to
address the heat. The band that was playing
towards the top of the hill near mile 12 was jamming!
The music helped me to forget about the final hill,
albeit my legs reminded me later after the race.
Great race by TVFR’s team.

Claddagh
Pub 4 Miles - Lowell, MA - March 1, 2009
- From
Mary Tyler: Pretty snowy and a little slippery,
so quite a few people walked down one of the steep
hills (not so great for times) but a real advantage
for someone not so speedy. It was a big race
with a lot of snow runners so I had plenty of company.
