Holliston 5K for Children's Hospital - Holliston, MA - May 31, 2009  -   All Tri-Valley runners placed in their divisions.  Ross Mungeam was 5th overall in the race and 2nd in his division.  Martin Auty took home second in his division and Charlene and Linda were 1, 2 in their division.   From Charlene:  This is a fairly flat course with just some real minor up-hills.   A nice day to run with temperatures in the 60s!  But this is my third race this year with a time of 27:30!  I'm just stuck on that time.  From Martin Auty: Almost a picture perfect day.  Sunny with a no humidity and a nice breeze.  This is a nice race for a good cause that starts and finishes at the Holliston High School.  It pretty much stays off the highly traveled roads and the police do a great job with traffic at the one busy intersection that you pass through on your way out and again on your way in.  I wouldn't call it a fast course but it is definitely not a challenging one either.  A minor climb going out and again at about two miles but the rest is pretty flat and or downhill.  My time was about 15 seconds slower than last year which might be a result of a hard track work out on Thursday.  If not the track workout I don't know what else I can blame it on.  And this runner likes to have a reason.  Regardless this is a well run race with plenty of refreshments following and for $15.00 with a t-shirt it is a bargain compared to other races that offer less.

Boston's Run to Remember Half Marathon - Boston, MA - May 24, 2009 -   From Jo-Ellen McCarrick: I have run this race in the past; however, this year definitely fell short – literally.  Runners were led off course in error and ran a course that was 815 feet short.  A number of runners posted race problems on Active.com.  Cited problems included lack of water stops, not enough portable toilets, lack of volunteers, medals provided with the wrong year listed, among others.  I think this year was a fluke for the number of problems.  There were a number of positives for this race including the great course.  I would most likely run this again.

Slicker N'Hog Snot Trail Race - Southbridge, MA - May 24, 2009 -   From Rich:  This was a fun trail race with mix of gravel paths, some pavement, and about a mile of single track through dense woods. The race was very well marked with people at each turn to provide directions.

Pineland Farms Challenge 50 Miles - New Gloucester, ME - May 24, 2009  -   From Mike:  There are 4 distances to choose from 50mile, 50k, 25k, and a 4k canicross.   I ran the 50 miler, the weather was cool at the start, but when the moisture on the grass started to evaporate it got quite humid. Luckily it clouded up and cooled right off, otherwise it would have gotten ugly. They weren't kidding when they said the hills were unrelenting. The aid stations were well manned and stocked, and the volunteers couldn't have been nicer. The race went very well for me, after some advice from a couple of ultra vets after stonecat, I made hydration and sodium a priority. I ran the last 15 miles with the eventual 2nd place finisher, we worked together to try to get as far under 7hrs. as we could. Then we sprinted to the finish, see what happens when you don't show up for Larry's track workouts!

6th Annual Delaware Marathon - Wilmington, DE - May 17, 2008  -   From John  Brown:  This weekend I went to Philadelphia for my son Erik’s graduation from Temple and while I was down there ran the Delaware Marathon. Last year’s report mentioned a flat 4 loop course. They course was changed. This year’s course was a 2 loop figure eight type course with several significant hills, not overly steep but more than a mile long and they go up, and down (which wasn’t so good for me).  Anyway, I’ve been battling a leg injury since before Boston so I thought I’d run comfortably for the first loop to check out the course and see how I felt.   Although I had some pain and discomfort, the first loop went well and I came through the half at 1:29 and change. Then, almost instantly, the wheels came off.  Just after the halfway point my leg registered the damage resulting from the long down hill from mile 12 to 13.  By mile 14 I was having difficulty running and contemplated dropping out (that would have been the wise thing to do) but my oldest son, Sean, was also running his first marathon and I really didn’t want to quit.  So I foolishly plodded on.  All I can say about the second loop is I managed to finish, just barely.  Post race refreshments were nice and included: ice cream sandwiches, various meat and cheese sandwiches, pizza, soft pretzels, bananas, chips, soda, water, and ice tea.  There were also pre-race bagels and bananas available. Port-a-potty lines were very long 30 minutes before the race.  The race events included 600 marathoners, 600 half marathon and 200 relay teams so there were about 2000 runners. But all three events had different start times so although there were a lot of runners on the course it was never crowded.

Hopedale Boosters 5K Blue Raider Run - Hopedale, MA - May 17, 2009 -   Temperature at the start was in the low 60's with cloudy skies and a light wind.  Tri-Valley had a good turnout at this local race on both the course and in volunteers  Timing by our club.  Joe Jarvis beats his "old man" by just 26 seconds!  But Harry places first in his division.  Overall, eight TVFRers place in their divisions!

From Gary Atlas - David, Dave, Jaci, Sherry, Elizabeth, John, Frank, Larry - thanks again for the great job today in Hopedale.  From 11:16am to 11:26am, we had 100 runners cross the line.  TVFR handled it very well!  A great Race!!  Exceptionally Organized Volunteers We Are!!!  Special thanks to John Parker and Frank and Larry for the pre-work that they did in organizing the course and dropping off (and picking up) the equipment at the school.

1st Annual Jeanne Arathuzik Memorial 5K - Northboro, MA - May 3, 2009   -   From Harry Jarvis:  254 runners and walkers turned out for this inaugural event at Algonquin High on Sunday 5/3.  Conditions were good.  The course is out and back. and finishes on the track.  There were events for kids as well.  The proceeds will benefit student scholarships and The American Cancer Society.  Harry and Jay think the course may be short by 70 to 100 yards!

North Medford Club Overlook 7 Mile Trail Race - Fitchburg, MA - May 3, 2009   -  From Sara Minsk - This was a beautiful course and also the best marked course you could imagine!  It played faster than I had expected.   I personally didn't run faster but my competitors did!  The trail was mostly single track with some pine needle sections; a lot of inclines; and your typical rocks and roots.  There were also two water crossings with one forcing you to jump in and run through the water.  I felt like a "real" trail runner after that ... Ha ha ha!!  In addition, there was a junk art exhibit,  gorgeous lake scenery, and a waterfall along the course.  Water stops were plenty.  Very well run with friendly volunteers,  I am definitely going to do this race again!

2nd Annual Cox Marathon - Providence, RI - May 3, 2009-   From John Dumont: For the second annual Cox Sports Marathon and the 751 marathon runners, the weather was perfect - low 50's and overcast with a mild breeze.  The course has a couple good hill climbs, some rolling areas, and long stretches of flat terrain, a few miles of that along paved bike  trails that are easy on the legs.  Support along the course was very good with regular water/gatorade stops and occasional energy gels and medical aid.  Crowd support is sporadic.  This is a great Boston qualifier and was very well organized with plenty of post race refreshments.  Personally, I reached my goal of 3:30:00 under ideal conditions for which I was thankful.  Most of the race I ran sub 8 minute  miles, but  lost some of that time in the early 20's.  Luckily, my wife Lori was urging me to run hard at the finish line as we both watched the clock.

2nd Annual Willow Tree Half Marathon - Providence, RI - May 3, 2009-   From Martin Auty:   A  The weather was perfect for a race of any distance.  Temperature of about 47 at the 8:00 a.m. start and warming to about 52 during the race.  I would call the course challenging and not a race course to run a PR on.  There are three small hills between mile one and three with a larger hills at four miles, five miles and seven miles.  Miles eight, nine and most of ten are beautiful and run along a bike path beside the Seekonk River.  Once you exit the bike path there is another large hill that brings you up and over a bridge.  For me mile eleven to twelve was the toughest.  Mile twelve to thirteen is pretty flat and then a small uphill climb to the finish line.  I had two complaints about the race that I would like to see changed for next year.  The first problem was the start.  There were booths, aid stations, and vendors set up along both sides of the road approaching the starting line.  This made the narrow streets of Providence much narrower.  The marathon and half started at the same time and went out together.  This in itself was not a problem but many runners that did not belong up front were there and clogged the start and at least the first three miles of the race.  It took me over two minutes to cross the starting line and that is reflected in the difference between the gun time and net time.  However it does not take into consideration the congestion and zigging and zagging that I and many other runners had to do over the next three miles to get by the congestion.  My clock time at five miles was 40:05 (8:01 pace)  and the next five miles were 34:33 (6:54 pace), so you can see how the congestion really affected many, many runners.  The second issue was between mile 11 and 12.  We crossed a bridge and had to run down a pedestrian walk ramp that had four turns at 90 degree angles that you had to slow to almost a stop to navigate.  That being said I understand that it is only the second marathon, half marathon effort by the Cox group and I think they have the potential to make this a great annual event with some work on the start and a change in the course to eliminate the pedestrian ramp.
