32nd Annual
Clarence DeMar Marathon - Keene, NH - September 27, 2009
- From
Harry Jarvis: This is an old-fashioned marathon.
A small (240 runners), low cost, no frills, 26.2 mile run from Gilsum, NH south to the campus of Keene State College. This race is run mostly on scenic back roads with a couple of neighborhoods, a park, and a moderately tough hill (mile 22) thrown in. Plenty of water and Gatorade. Soup, bagels, fruit, yogurt and goodies at the end.
Showers in the gym. Awards (wall plaques) went 5 deep except for a couple of sparsely populated divisions. Very well done. We had cool temps with light rain and drizzle off and on.
Nice weather for a race.

Reebok Classic
- Canton Homecoming 10K - Canton, MA - September 26, 2009
- From
Martin Auty: Wow what a beautiful day. It almost made me forget that my last several races have been in terrible weather. It was a sunny cool morning but warmed quickly to a delightful 50'ish for the race. The course was a gradual incline for the first mile downhill for the second mile along a picturesque reservoir and soccer fields. We ran completely around the soccer fields through an Industrial Park and back alongside the fields before backtracking a bit on the course, running uphill before taking a left turn and a very steep downhill. I ended up running alone from mile three to the finish with just a glimpse of a colored t-shirt way off in the distance. The last mile was flat to a punishing uphill climb that ended in front of the cafeteria of the Canton High School. Plenty of water along the route with food and drinks afterwards. Sixteenth overall and first in my division.

Norfolk's
Dunkin Donuts Dare to Run 5K - Norfolk, MA - September 20, 009
- Mike
Sawyer wins this race, with a time over 2 minutes faster than
the second place finisher. Nice job
Mike!!!!! From Mike Sawyer: This was a well done race, even a BBQ afterwards. I figure with the aging affecting basic speed etc I should probably count my blessings. I figure my days of winning races outright vs. competing in division are, like anyone, numbered. But got one more after 48.

Lone Gull 10K -
Gloucester, MA - September 20, 2009
- From
Mary Tyler: I had been having problems with my Achilles, and not running much since Labor Day, but ran the Lone Gull USATF 10K today anyway at Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester.
Nothing hurt, but I was really disappointed in my endurance.
Wouldn't have thought a couple of weeks of would make that much difference.
The course was beautiful, lots of ocean views with some small hills but nothing major. The race started at 9 AM, so instead of a BBQ, they served breakfast - scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, orange juice and coffee.

7th Annual
Caritas Norwood 4 Miler - Norwood, MA - September 19, 2009
- This
was a Rat Race which is why Harry was running the race. He
placed 3rd in his age group and 17 out of over 150
runners. Charlene takes 1st in her age
group. From Charlene: If I had know
how many hills were in the race, I might not have run
it. Good thing it was an out and back course and I
could make up time of the nice downhills (as opposed to losing
time on the wicked uphills.)

Run to the Rock
Half Marathon - Plymouth, MA - September 12, 2009
- From
Martin Auty: The South Shore was wet and wild, not quite the way I like my races. Only one thing bothered me about this race. We took a bus from the finish line out to the starting point of the race and had to wait in line in the rain for about 40 minutes to get inside the building and pick up our registered numbers. Runners that were registered were able to forgo the line and enter the building to fill out paperwork and register. That left most of us cold and wet and not to happy. Fortunately the pouring rain let up during the race to a light rain and heavy drizzle. The Run to the Rock was a steady series of up the Hill down the Hill run for the first 11 and 1/2 . You were either going up or going down and at mile 9 there were a series of 3 very large hills that tested your mental and physical toughness. Finally the last mile and a half were downhill to a flat finish..... Not too many hills at sea level and we were running parallel to the ocean. I had a hard time with a tight hamstring that has been flaring up the last couple of weeks and the downhill running took a toll. The weather and the course we not what you would like for running a good fast race but that was the same for everyone. I was happy that I finished and even more happy with a runners tent that was set up with plenty of food and drink. I would run this race again.
