Sheraton Hyannis /
Half Marathon / Hyannis / MA / Sunday,
February 26 -
Mary
cut three
minutes off of her half marathon time in Florida last month.
Maybe she likes a temperature of 20 and a single number wind
chill factor blowing in off of the ocean compared to the
warmth of Florida......
From Mary Tyler - We
did the whole weekend. We went to Hanlon Shoe for the Friday
reception. I would say about 30 people max, mostly locals,
showed up to chat and run with Bill. We did the chat part,
and skipped the run - it was cold and dark. Ted did get a
lot of pictures at the event to post along with the pasta
and race photos - they should be on the web Tuesday or
Wednesday; he's been having some technical problems.
We had registered for the Saturday pasta party when I signed
up for the race. In past years there have been a lot of
empty tables, so I'm not surprised many people waited until
the day of the event. I knew there were a lot more people
than previous years, and no empty tables, but didn't realize
people were actually turned away.
This is the first year I signed up for the half, although
Ted ran it last year. I've been having problems running in
the cold - exercise and/or cold induced asthma now that I'm
over 55 (so unfair!) and my doc has been trying to get me
stabilized without resorting to a rescue inhaler. Last
Sunday at the Foxboro 10-miler, it took a long time to get
my breathing under control even after I finished, so for the
Hyannis Half I was planning to do the run-walk Galloway
method and go for a personal record - personal slowest time,
that is!
As John said, the first 5 miles were pretty cold and windy,
but not too horrible, so at the decision point (about 5 1/2)
I took the fork for the half. It's a beautiful course, some
nice ocean views, and a few rolling hills, but definitely
cold and windier on the half. There were a couple of places
along Craigville Beach into the wind and then uphill where I
had to take unplanned stops and walk and pull my gator up
over my face and nose in order to breathe. Also, I actually
had to turn back at one water station because the cup I had
taken was completely frozen solid. Still, I felt pretty good
until a little over 12 miles. I hit another uphill into the
wind, and even though it wasn't a big uphill, my body
decided it had had enough! I did, of course manage to put on
a final finishing spurt at the very last turn into the
finish! Nice hot soup and bagels at the finish line, and a
small party at the bar afterwards, as well. Not quite a PW,
but close. The Clearwater Half in the heat has that record.
I'm hoping it will be like Goldilocks and the 3 Bears. The
Clearwater Half was way too hot and humid and my body gave
up at 11 miles. The Hyannis Half was way too cold and windy
and my body gave up just past 12 miles. I figure the New
Bedford Half should be just right and I should make it all
the way to 13.1 feeling great! |

Sheraton Hyannis /
10K / Hyannis / MA / Sunday,
February 26 -
From
John Loughnane - Given the internet, it is no longer
possible to run in relative obscurity. Timewise, the worst
race ever but completely of no surprise given the poor
training effort I mustered. I had run the half a few years
ago and enjoyed it. This year, with my training time
squeezed, I opted for the 10k -- a nice feature to bail out
to a lower level and still participate. I brought the family
along and the kids enjoyed the indoor pool on Saturday (much
to everybody's dismay, however, pump failure caused a
closure on Sunday). The weather was cold -- but sunny. The
wind was not a factor for most of the way, but I heard it
was not pleasant for those continuing on for the half or
full marathon. Water stations were well-stocked. Had to
break through the top level of ice to actually get at
liquid. Many more people than I remember in 2003. I thought
the event was very well organized and operated fairly
smoothly. Big line for the pasta dinner with some (many)
folks being turned away after waiting it out for a while. I
think there was an option to register in advance -- and
certainly no shortage of other places to head out to. Bill
Rodgers apparently did a fun run on Friday night which I
missed. He was generous with his time n Sat at the expo
signing autographs and talking with my kids. I had last seen
him at Equity Office trail run at Thompson Island in
September -- where I distinctly remember twisting my ankle
on a downhill, loose dirt/rock path. Still feeling that. All
in all, a good experience and hope to use it as a base point
to get back in saddle and recommit for other events in
spring/summer. |

Survival Series Race #1.
Although the weather didn't cooperate this race was very
much a success as our series opener. Twenty-three
runners participated in either the ten miler or the 5K.
Our Support team included Mary Tyler, injured John
Brown, and Larry Olsen. As the weather turns
brighter and warmer I am sure we will have more and more
club members joining in these series races. Anyone
with comments regarding your race yesterday or the event
itself, please comment for inclusion. A few
moments of your time may help to inform and motivate
another member, and isn't that what we are all about.
Take a moment and post your
results Here -

10 Miles / Foxboro / MA / Sunday,
February 19 -
Tough
racing conditions with a temperature of about 20 and a
strong northwest wind that greeted the runners at various
points during the ten miles, but particularly tough at mile
nine. Mike Sawyer coming back from injury although not
happy with his time ran very well and continues to recover.
Rich Allen took two minutes off of his time from last year.
Stacey ran ten miles for the first time this year and had a
very strong race. Linda Usher took home the gold in
her division and was the only club member to place in a very
competitive field. The rest of us ran hard and enjoyed
the food and banter following the race.
From Rich Allen -
This is the 3rd time I ran this one and I think I enjoy
going to this race more and more each year. What a
phenomenal presence by the club too. Although not doing any
marathoning over the last few years, this 10 miler has been
a great goal for me just to stay on top of my training
through the winter. It's great to have a fun, reliable race
to look forward to. I know each year after the holidays that
Martin Auty and I will start checking in with each other to
see how the preparation is going for Foxboro. And Martin was
well prepared this year, dropping a couple of minutes off
his time from the previous year (though he did run a 5k race
the day before in 2005...that's Martin for ya). There are
continuous rolling hills through this one, which I actually
enjoy since it forced me to change gears quite often. On
that last mile, just as we approached the mile 9 marker, the
wind really picked up and began to penetrate. That just got
me to clock my fastest mile at 6:32 with the inspiration of
the thought of the hot soup that was waiting for us inside.
I'm looking forward to this one again. |

the medals. John Kelley fifth place overall and first
in his division. Kelley Terrill seventh and third in
his division. Charlene Gaboriault first . Linda
Calderiso, John Potyraj, and ageless Frank Nealon all with
second place finishes. Mike Federico third in his
division. Kathryn Fetteroll finished just out of
the medal hunt with fourth. Newcomers Amy Bastille and
Stephanie Marcott did very well in their fist TVFR race. Amy
finished fourth in her division and Stephanie sixth. Great
job everyone!!
From Amy
Bastille - Fast, flat and freezing cold. Little confusion as
to where to start 5K portion of race. I ended up at the
wrong start line. Food was okay. No water stops during 5K
race. |

Martha's Vineyard 20 miler / MV / MA / Saturday,
February 18 -
Good
job by our Boston Marathon hopefuls as they continue to add
miles to their training and racing. Jim Perry with a
great run finishing ninth overall and third in his division.
Andy Barron with a very strong run as well and Sue and
Kelly.
From Jim Perry -
This is a great race. Take 500 loosely wrapped runners,
ferry them to an island in the dead of winter and have a 20
mile race. Completely worth it. A lot of logistics, but it's
a very well organized race. Kelly, Sue and I rallied down to
Woods Hole for the boat and ran the race. Windy. Sue ripped
one and far exceeded her expectations, Kelly ran well
grinding into the wind and we all got a killer workout for
Boston. My plan with the 20-30mph wind, was to play the
conservative ticket for the first 10 and let go in the
second. We got out there and the wind was behind us early,
unexpectedly. So being a bit of a loose cannon, I went out
with an opening 10 of 1:00:32 and all was good until a turn
at 10, putting us straight into the wind; the work was about
to begin. I threw in a huge positive split with a second
half of 1:06:16, oops... ;) I was in 5th and could see third
at 15-16 when a group of 4 passed me dropping me to 9th for
the day. I ended up missing my course PR by only 14 seconds.
That surprised me. Overall a good run, but I should have
stuck with the original plan. Big feed at the end, hot
showers, just one mess-up on transportation making 60 of us
watch a ferry leave and hanging us up in the terminal for
1.5 hours waiting to get to the mainland. Overall, well
worth the effort. A gotta due for you distancers. |

Super 5K /
3.1 / Naragannsett / RI / Sunday,
February 5 -
From
Andy - What a day for racing. 47 degrees to start the
race! This winter has been amazing. The field was very
strong at this race. My first mile was 5:44, followed by a
12:15 split at mile 2. This is actually the first race
I've run since Cape Cod. Boy I'm out of race shape but it
was a good run to get in before Martha's Vineyard on the
17th. See you all out on the roads! Andy! |

Mid Winter 10 Mile Classic
/ Cape Elizabeth / ME / Sunday, February 5 -
From Jim - This was
a fun one. We woke the family at 5, drove about 2:45, met my
parents who are local to the race and then, since we were
properly stiffened from the trip, ran a challenging 10er.
Lots of long climbs. Big race for Maine, tons of teams etc.
Kelly popped one. She dropped her per mile land speed 34
sec./mile from Raynham a month ago with her marathon
training. Great run. I was happy with my run. The weather
going up was torrential rain and wind, but with an hour to
go, the clouds cleared for a perfect 40 degree, wind-free
race. It's a well organized, state championship race. A bit
of a trip, passing other races that are more local, but
nice. Another one in the bank... ...Boston on the horizon. |
