Marine Corps Marathon / Arlington / VA / Sunday, October 28 - Don Basso qualifies for the Boston Marathon with a great effort and results at the Marine Corps Marathon.... Congratulations Don.
From Don Basso - First of all, I got the best long-sleeve T shirt ever. It is done up in Marine Corps theme, and already when I wear it, people treat me with just a little more respect! That alone was worth the effort.
This was a very well-run race. Transportation from parking to village was like clockwork. The start was precisely on time. There was never a tie-up during the beginning of the race, and the water, gel, orange slices, and energy bean stops were impeccable. The Marines were out in force manning all of the above, and I had plenty of opportunities to yell out, “Thank you, Marines.”
The course has some early upgrades followed by long downgrades. Then it’s flat forever. The last mile features a long gradual upgrade, and then a hill right before the finish. I passed about 10 people on that hill. I wound up running just in front of a girl from Taunton for about half of the race.
Post-run, we got thermals, water, food, medals, and our bags very efficiently.
I have QUALIFIED for Boston by almost 10 minutes. This is a PR by 12 minutes. Next up: Boston 2008.

Cape Cod Marathon / Falmouth / MA/ Sunday, October 28 - Great job by John and Harry and of course Larry.  John just coming off of the Detroit Marathon a week ago
From John Brown  - Harold and I ran the Cape Cod Marathon as part of the USATF series this past Sunday. Larry ran as part of a relay team and won. Weather was almost perfect. My legs were still toast from Detroit so I tried (unsuccessfully?) to take it easy. Even stopped early on a couple of times to slow myself down. Before the race I figured I'd be lucky to finish under 3:30. From about mile 6 on I started experiencing progressively worsening pain in my quads, calf's and hamstrings. But it was only muscular pain and I was enjoying the race so I ignored it as much as I could. When I past the half way point in 1:36:32 I thought a 3:15 might be possible. I started to focus a little more and push the pace a bit. By the time mile 22 came around my quads were screaming and I started thinking only 4 miles to go and a 3:10 might be possible. So I pushed a little harder. Miles 25 and 26 were my fastest miles of the day. In the end, I managed to run a negative split of almost 5 minutes. Today (Monday), walking is difficult, stairs are a challenge, and forget about running.
All in all, race was well organized and went off without a hitch. The post race meal was excellent (pasta, clam chowder, fruits, rolls). Only wish we had another runner to score in the USATF standings.

Greater New Bedford Track Club Spooner 10k / New Bedford / MA/ Sunday, October 28 - Meredith continues to run very well this year.  In this "tune up" before her marathon she finished sixth overall, second woman and second in her division.  Not a bad day on the roads.......
From Meredith Dutton - This race had a tiny field, but I enjoyed the break from clogged starts. If you don't mind looking a quarter-mile down the road for the next person you want to catch, the sparseness can feel good. Besides, every single person at the post-race festivities seemed to go home with something--if not a performance- based award, then a prize from the generous raffle. Entrants are asked to bring along two cans for the local food pantry. It would be nice to see that stack of cans higher next year! (Times are provided every mile on the route; good traffic control.)

Canton Fall Classic / 5K  / Canton / MA/ Sunday, October 28 - A beautiful day and a good size crowd.  Both the 5K and 10K races started off together with over 400 runners towing the line.  A fairly strong head wind for more than a mile for us 5K runners before we turned off and faced a series of four inclines or as I call them "hills".  Lots of raffles, food and awards following the race.

Cam Neely / 5K   / Milford / MA / Saturday, October 21- Mike Sawyer coming off the Runner of the Month for September wins this race and was never really challenged in setting another PR.  Harry Jarvis tenth overall and first in his division.  Sorry Joe didn't have a division for you but good run anyway.  Elizabeth Morin first in her division and Jo-Ellen McCarrick our tri-athlete had a very good run for herself.

Detroit Free Press Marathon  / Detroit / MI / Saturday, October 20 - A year ago Sherry said that she and John wanted to run a marathon in every state.  That is an ambitious goal but it looks like they are giving it a go with Michigan added to the list.  Great Job John and Sherry.... PR's that is wonderful
From Sherry Brown - Great day for a little run.....decent results by the Browns. Both set new PR's. John set a new PR by 5 seconds, with stomach issues and 2 potty stops and Sherry set a PR by a mile!!! (actually by 7 minutes) Near perfect weather, but at times a tough head wind, especially the last 4 miles. Nice flat course with relatively few hills, including a trip into Canada via the Ambassador Bridge and back into the States via the Windsor tunnel. And, yes...border crossing were included. One more thing, the medals are nice and they must weigh a ton! Great bling and a good day!!!!

Westwood Boosters 5K  / Westwood / MA / Saturday, October 20 - Approximately 110 runners in this the first annual event.  A very nice pre and post race setup with food and drink available at the track and restroom facilities.  The weather was perfect with sun and a temperature of 63.  The course is a hilly one so nor set for a PR.
From Martin Auty - I was talked into running this race to try and build speed and I am glad I did.  I felt comfortable the entire race with no aches or pains for the first time this racing season.  Too bad snow is coming.....

Wakefield High School / 5K   / Raleigh / NC / Saturday, October 13 - Our friends from the south are reporting in with some good results.  Caryn is smoking with a second place finish in her division and Ryan running very well with a fifth place finish in his division
Race Report from Tim on the sidelines The second annual Wakefield High School 5K to benefit S.A.D.D.  An out and back course with some pretty tricky hills on the way back.  Both Caryn and Ryan ran well with Ryan coming in 17th overall and Caryn capturing 2nd in her division, despite not having run in nearly 3 weeks!  Evan was unable to run due to a baseball game and Tim was unable due to arthroscopic surgery on the knee.  Enough of the excuses, those of us who DID run ran very well!!!

Great Island   / 5K / New Castle / NH / Sunday, October 7 - A great performance by Mike and Larry in this 5K.  Mike Sawyer set a PR finishing tenth overall and Larry took first in his division and seventeenth overall in a field of 630 runners.  Note the age graded performance  results which would have given Larry a second place finish overall and moved Mike up to ninth.

RRI Rise and Shine  / 10K / Sturbridge / MA / Sunday, October 7 - Don Basso thought he could get away from us.  But roving eyes found him in Sturbridge where he finished seventh overall as he fine tunes his running in preparation for the Marine Corps Marathon at the end of the month.

Applefest  / Half Marathon / Hollis / NH / Saturday, October 6 - John Dumont turned in a very good performance in this half marathon.  Sounds like there were some issues with the start and the chips....
From John Dumont - Approximately 1500 runners in both the individual and relay category ran on this hot and humid autumn morning. A scenic rolling course with some music and a really good climb at mile 10. Great food after the race with all the regular fare plus plenty of local apple cobbler. I was surprised to find I had bib #2. Evidently I registered early! My actual time was 1:36:00 giving me a pace of 7:18, don't know why my chip didn't register at the start. This is a great race - probably better with true fall weather.
