Inaugural Clearwater Halfathon /
13.1 miles / Clearwater / FL / Sunday,
January 22 -
A nice break
from New England and a mixture of family and fun for Mary
and Ted. If you look at Ted's pictures you can see the
man made hills in this race. Looks like a not so easy
run.
From Mary -
It really should have titled this the Clearwater 10 Mile
Run. Yes, it was really a Half Marathon but the last 3 miles
were pretty much a disaster. After several races
in snowstorms, Ted and I decided to combine a trip to visit
family (my brother lives about an hour out of Tampa) with an
easy flat 10K that was to accompany the Clearwater
Marathon. Check out the
pictures.............

Boston Prep /16 mile / Derry / NH / Sunday,
January 22- Great
performances on a tough course by both Jim and George.
Jim finished twenty-second overall and fourth in his
division. George continues to run very well with a
third place finish in his division. I have included
the impressive slips for both of these runners. Way to
go guys !!
From Jim Perry -
Derry's one of those bend or break races. I was psyched to
have some luck this year, PRing for the course. Hugely
varied terrain, plenty of talk about the monstrous hills
afterward. You do get great downs too though, being a loop
course. My splits went from 2x6:58's to a 5:59 at mile 8. It
was nice having John B. to drive up with, being on the
injured (IR) reserve, to soak up some energy. It was fun
seeing George 'The Animal' Cunha, as salty as he is, running
his 10,001st road race, scrambling at the start pressing
time. Great run G! 3rd AG is solid on such an honest course.
Great organization, great feed afterward, tough run. Lucky
on the weather this year, a little wind, but nothing to
complain about. Snow's back this morning though. Stay safe
on the roads.

15K Frostbite Invitational Midwinter Classic /9.3
miles / Raynham / MA / Sunday,
January 15 -
From Martin
-
Let's
start with the course. We were lulled into a false
sense of security by the first four miles with small
inclines and flat roads. We all thought we might be
over-dressed. All that changed at mile about mile four
when we began facing the Canadian Northwest gales force
winds. Overdressed !! I could have used a snow suit
and not been warm. Mile six brought on the first
serious hill right into the wind, then a series of rolling
hills, before heading back to the finish at the Raynham
Middle School. The weather was twenty-five with
blowing snow and wind gusts of 25-35 mph at the start
of the race. The temperature dropped throughout the
race to about nineteen by the finish. Mike Sawyer
had a great time finishing tenth overall and third in his
division. Jim Perry finished nineteenth and fifth in
his division. Larry Olsen who likes the temperature
about 85-90 finished second in his division.
Kelly Perry also had a good race. I was pleased with
my placement and time for mid-January. And we all were
pleased with a hot breakfast following the race.
From Jim Perry - It always
feels great after one of those winter races that you battle
the elements. Somehow having TVFR's to chat with, along with
250+ other runners, makes me feel as if I'm not quite as
tapped as one may think... ...enjoying the run? Mike put it
best when he said, "I bet you could really pop one on this
course if it were April." It wasn't. A hidden gem. Nice
course, good organization and a great post race brunch.
...and had hot showers, too! Welcome to the winter.

Sterling Freezer Five /
5
miles / Sterling / MA / Sunday,
January 1 - For
some reason when I think of Sterling in the winter I think
of Green Bay Wisconsin. Maybe it is because of the
name of this race. It didn't keep Wayne away and he
had a good start to his racing season. From Wayne -
Sterling is a nice race run by CMS.
The course has no significant hills apart from an
inconvenient rise about .26 from the finish. Unfortunately,
being winter the conditions are often less than conducive to
quick times. This year: 2 inches of slippery snow throughout
since it's a back roads race and no melting had occurred.
Nice people, lots of fruit and donuts and prizes.

Run 4 New Years /4
miles / Waltham / MA / Sunday,
January 1 - Not the best weather to
start of the New Year with but Ted and Mary made the best of
it. A temperature of about 23 with two to three inches
of snow that blanketed the region overnight but the roads
were in good shape. Good race by both Ted and Mary.

Main Street Mile /1 mile / Worcester / MA / Saturday,
December 31 - A
big field for this second with over 230 runners entered in
this late afternoon event. Anne MacKay showing no
signs of slowing down was the first in for TVFR with a
forty-third place finish overall. Doug and Linda Usher
also had great times, showing that this falls track work did
help. Ray Lussier never grows old and never slows.
