13th Annual Boston Prep / 16 Miles / Derry  / NH / Sunday, January 27 - Four of our TVFR stars made the trip to the Great North Country with John Brown leading the way and first in his division.  John Dumont second TVFR followed by Jay McGonnell and Demetra Edwards with a good run as they ready themselves for Boston, running in less then ideal conditions.     LINK
From John Dumont - weather was great for running with temps in 20's and light snow.  however, the inch of snow made for a slippery sixteen miles causing long stretches of runners in single file just to have some traction.  essentially, "pass at your own risk!"  these conditions greatly increased all runner's target pace.  beyond the slippery conditions, the course is challenging with rolling hills and one significant climb around the 11 mile mark.

Frostbite 15K Midwinter Classic Road Race/ 15K / Raynham / MA / Sunday, January 20 - The dropping temperatures, wind and freezing cold conditions didn't stop Don Basso or John Dumont.  Both had very good races on what is considered a challenging course.  LINK
From Jay McGonnell - Derry 16 mile Boston Prep: Moderately challenging as advertised...and it would have been without snow, slush, slow conditions, and single file trekking. And oh yeah, hills!! This all made it VERY challenging. They say the scenery was nice, but one could not see it constantly looking down! Not a bad effort for those 800+ hearty souls out there in Derry Village. Great help from the volunteers and even better food. This is a race you'll be glad you did. Good job everybody and props to John Brown for finishing numero uno in his age group!!
From Demetra Edwards - A very challenging course made even more difficult this year due to the slippery road conditions.  The first 11 miles include a lot of hills and some are quite significant.  The longest and most challenging hill presents at about mile 10.5.  From about mile 12 to the end it's quite flat and enjoyable.  The course support is great - even for the back of the pack runners and the end of the race provisions are wonderful.
From John Dumont - The weather was not as bad as originally forecast, though still cold and windy, particularly the last few miles.  The course does not seem as difficult as advertised.  Perhaps we all just get conditioned to hills as we ramp up for Boston.  A nice breakfast served after race.
A note on the use of Ipods:  while not an opponent of their use, I did have to ask a woman to move for a truck she didn't hear.  More importantly and in my case, my Ipod was still on as I jogged back to the school when I thought I heard my name called.  I turned and recognized no one - evidently from the race results it was Don Basso.  Maybe I should start wearing my glasses and ditch the Ipod.  Sorry Don!  And lastly, our 50 plus age group gets better with every race - keep up the good work.
From Don Basso - Here's my story. I only learned this when I went back to the records after the race. Last year I ran the Frostbite, and wound up in a sprint to the finish with a runner about my age. He beat me by less than a second. We put our arms on each other's shoulders after the race, congratulating ourselves on the fierce, but friendly competition. Jen Jarvis now works with a runner by the name of Don Cuddy, and I was asked by Jen and Harry to beat him. "He's toast," I bravely said. I beat Don Cuddy by about 5 minutes this year, and it turns out that the same Don Cuddy beat me by less than a second last year!

Tom's Tavern Hangover Classic / 3 miles / Wrentham / MA / Tuesday, January 1
From Harry Jarvis - 113 runners took to the streets of Wrentham for their first race of '08 amid snow flurries. The snow got progressively heavier as the race went on but didn't accumulate until all the runners were in. Tom's serves a great brunch buffet and there's a raffle and awards as well. A great way to start the new year.

27th HANGOVER CLASSIC 5K & 10K  / Salisbury / MA / Tuesday, Jan 1  Meredith Dutton starts off the New Year with a bang.  Seventh place woman and first in her division.  Meredith claims that many of the runners thought the times recorded were slightly faster than the actual time, but in any case this is a great way to start the year.  The Dynamic duo of Ted and Mary Tyler broke into the new year with good New Years day runs.

WMAC FAT ASS 50K  / North Adams / MA / Saturday, December 29  50K - let's see hmmm 31 miles., holy flat feet batman!!! John finishes third overall in this race.
From John Brown - The Western Massachusetts Athletic Club Fat Ass 50k was held in North Adams, MA on Saturday, December 29th. The course consisted of a 3.6 mile out and back plus five 5.5-mile loops on mostly flat roads. Participants could choose to run just a portion of the distance or complete the whole 50 K (31.1 miles). This was a fun, no frills event. No entry fee, no awards, some water, powerade, and cookies at the start and water and cookies at about mile 2. The race started at 10 and the course was open for 6 hours, however you could start early if you wanted. You recorded your time on a board each time you passed the start finish line. 41 run runners participated with 15 runners completing the full 50k. This was my first ultra and I really enjoyed it.
