21th Annual BayState Marathon and Half Marathon  -Lowell, MA - October 18, 2009   From Harry Jarvis: Congratulations to Jason Stock for his 3:04:28 Boston Qualifier! I am truly impressed!  And a hearty nice job! to Mike Sawyer who finished 16th overall and 2nd in a tough division in the half. Nothing like running for hours in an ice-cold, wind-driven rain in October, huh?

Paddy's Pub Shillelagh Shuffle - West Newton, MA - October 18, 2009   From Charlene:   It was cold, rainy and just awful.   I was soaked before I started and did not feel my feet until mile two.  (I couldn't see how those Bay Staters were able to run!).   Flat course - no hills.   Nice t-shirts - sized for woman and some warm food afterwards.

Bobby Bell 5 Mile Road Race - Haverhill, MA - October 11, 2009   From Harry Jarvis:  Uphill for the first half, downhill for the second half. Not too bad. Sunny but cool day. Lots of food, including several kinds of pasta dishes, hotdogs, munchies and desserts. Also water, soda and beer. Goofy scoring system whereby they reduce the women's times by multiplying them by .88 and then make the women compete in the same divisions as the men. A quick scan of these "gender graded" divisions leads me to the conclusion that the women would be better off in their own divisions.

New Hampshire Marathon - Bristol, NH - October 3, 2009 - From Harry Jarvis:  Moderately hilly. Not as bad as I thought it would be. Very scenic. Mostly light rain with periods of cold, heavy rain. Pizza and fruit at the end but I couldn't enjoy it since it was outside and I was wet and headed toward hypothermia. Instead I got changed and went to Dunkin Donuts for some hot coffee and fat pills. Life was good after that.

Apple Harvest Ramble 10 Miles - Harvard, MA - October 4, 2009  -  From Meredith Dutton:  Gorgeous foliage, a warm October day with the forecasted rain nowhere in sight, and sweet, crisp, crunchy, juicy apples afterwards. What more could you ask for from a race? "Hills," you say? Plenty of them, too! While this is the same loop course--just in reverse--some of us ran a couple years ago when Ramble was on the Grand Prix schedule, I must report that it is infinitely less demoralizing to run in the direction we did this year. Starting down the monster hill that the other version had us finishing up was a gift. Water stops every other mile; very well marked (and we runners did get fairly spread out). Did I already say "foliage"? What a beautiful setting and day.
