Farms Trail Running Festival - 50 Miles - New Gloucester, ME
- May 28, 2011 - A
description of the course - "The race course is
three laps of a 25 kilometer off-road roller coaster on well-maintained XC trails that twist, turn, and roll their way through forests and across pastoral, working farmland. The trails are level, wide (12'), and non-technical with no roots or rocks, but very hilly. Although there are no major climbs the rolling terrain is unrelenting."
From John Brown: The description doesn't do it
justice. The pastoral, working farmland were fields
that had paths recently cut through them;the "grass" was still about a foot high,
with all the cut grass still on top, and the paths had
tire ruts and sections of water/mud throughout. Our 15k
course is flat compared to this. It was definitely a challenge. My legs are completely
shot and I'm still walking gingerly after 3 days.

Preschool 5K - Milford, MA - May 22, 2011 - From
Bill Lyon: This was a first time race and awards
were limited to the m/f overall winners. Nice snacks after the
race including a surprisingly tasty "kale" shake
from whole foods market. Race had significant hills for the
first two thirds of the course followed by a nice gradual
incline to the finish.

- May 22, 2011 - This
is the third race in the New England Pub Series.
Temps
were trying to break 50 so a bit cool. With Mary
Tyler sitting on the sidelines while recovering from knee
surgery, it was Ted who is in running for that "Pub
Jacket". Course was hilly but except for one hill
at the end, the last mile or two was downhill. Nice
cookout at the end.

3rd Annual
Hopedale Blue Raider 5K - Hopedale, MA - May 7, 2011 - The
second TVFR Grand Prix event for May. Weather was a
little on the warm side compared to what we've been having but
at least the hail and thunderstorms held off. Several
TVFRers placed in their divisions - 1st were Mike Walsh,
Jennifer Lade and Charlene Gaboriault. 2nd were Jason
Stock, Joe Drugan, Claire Quinn and Linda Zavalick. 3rd
were Henry Lane and Susan Manna.

Eident Sports
Half Marathon - May 1, 2011 - From
Les: I was able to take first place in the 50 to 59
division for the Cox (Eident Sports) Half Marathon. This
is the furthest that I have run in over 20 years. Felt
good to go this distance although I did fall apart a little
over the final 2 miles. Looking forward to more of the
longer races. The race went off at 8:00 am.
Temperatures remained low for the race. Great day for a
race.

Walter
Childs Race of Champions Marathon - Holyoke, MA - May 1, 2011
- From John Brown:
This is a small
marathon run on a challenging course. The race starts at the
old Mount Tom ski lodge. The course is mostly downhill for a
little over a mile into the reservoir, where you complete
several loops on a mostly flat dirt/crushed stone road.
Leaving the reservoir after mile 9 the course is uphill for a
mile before finally arriving back on the roads. The next 12
miles consist of rolling hills with some flat stretches on
back country roads. Around mile 22 you pop out onto a main
road, which is flat for a while, followed by 2 miles of
gradual climb, and finally a right hand turn and a steep 1/2
uphill climb on the Mount Tom access road. The post race
refreshments were excellent. A sample of what could be had
included: pasta, potato salad, lunch meat and cheese, rolls,
meatballs, soda, and water.

was the first May Tri-Valley Grand Prix
race. Over 2100 runners in this race which
was also a USATF Grand Prix race. Glenn, Linda and Mike were the only
TVFRers in the race as it appears others are saving themselves
for the shorter 5K next Saturday. Linda Usher does
capture a third place division win!

Nice day
for running. Hilly course with a nice down hill at the
beginning but a long uphill at the end. Great cookout
and trophies! Mike Sawyer is 5th overall. All 3
TVFRers place in their divisions with Mike and Charlene taking
1st and Diane taking 2nd.
