Mayapple Ultras 100K (formerly South Mountain 100K - May 22, 2010 -   From John Brown: There were 85 pre-registered runners, 58 for the 100K and 27 for the 50K.  I'm not sure how many started the 100K but only 14 finished.  I finished in a tie for 7th place, which sounds much better if you don't look at the total number of finishers.  And the tie wasn't like a photo finish you might expect in a typical road race.  We ran the last 15 miles or so together; there was no racing!

This was a "Fat Ass" event in North Jersey, which basically means no costs and no support, which in this case wasn’t really accurate. The volunteers were there before the 6am start and still there well after dark. The course consisted of 10.7 mile loop and a 10 mile loop (shaped like shoe string knot). Each loop was run 3 times (or 1 ½ times for the 50). There was an aid station at the 5 mile point of each loop and back at the center. They took drop bags if you brought them out to each loop aid station for you. You could also leave a drop bag at the center aid station. There were a couple of volunteers at each aid station along with water. Runners also brought Gatorade, Heed, Accelerade, chips, bagels, PB&J, salted potatoes, candy, pretzels, salt tablets, ginger, and a host of other stuff, which were also stocked at the aid stations.  There was plenty of everything. This was a trail run and the course was pretty technical, at least in my mind; lots of ankle twisting rocks, stumps, ruts, trees, mud, water, rolling hills, and "moderate" climbs (~1300 feet of ascent per loop). The course was fairly well marked but you really had to pay attention.

I should mention that I had a blast!  Everyone I encountered was very friendly and supportive. To me the race felt more like a challenge than a race. Except for the first 10 and the last 15 miles, I pretty much ran alone and never saw anyone until I came to an aid station. So if you like a challenge, enjoy the camaraderie of fellow runners, and are really into pain, then this is an ideal race.

Walter Childs Race of Champions Marathon - Holyoke, MA - May 2, 2010 -   From Mike Carroll:  Brutally hot day, right from the start. The volunteers did a great job w/ plenty of water stops, and encouragement. Rob Landry won it again with an outstanding effort and near even splits, despite the hellish heat. This race remains my favorite, with the most friendly runners and volunteers.  I'll be back for my 8th next year.

was already in the 80's
